WRITERS STUDIO - Anthony E Thorogood

Writers' Studio – Ever thought you could be an author?
“Everyone has a Story”

BOOK NOW

In this new and exciting Writers' Studio- called “Everyone Has A Story” we will explore the ‘yarn’ that everyone has inside their head and the different ways to tell it.  A person's life experiences, feelings, passions, successes and failures all come together to create a story.  Whether that story is expressed on canvas, music or in words, your story is worth telling.

  • We will try to get to grips with what you, as an author, have to say. Where does inspiration come from? Writing from the heart.  We need to explore the question - why write?  Do you believe in yourself? Who is your audience? How do you know if you are any good? Do you need to sell a million copies?
  • We will also look at the flesh and bones of a book.  How to put those elusive words on paper. Should you let inspiration flow or is a rigid timetable the way to go? The language you use - big words or little words, epic paragraphs and marathon sentences or clear concise English.
  • We will explore publishing options.  How DO YOU get published? Is it all about submitting manuscripts to publishers and agents, and covering your wall with rejection slips, or are there alternative ways to publish? Can you publish your own book locally? Can you publish on the internet? How do you create eBooks? How do you go about editing, formatting and creating cover art?

There's a lot to talk about, come along and tell us what you write and what you want to achieve with your writing, maybe you can learn something and who knows, maybe a new door might open for you.  Even if you’ve never written a word before but think you might like to try… this is the studio for you, so secure your place now!

Who is Anthony E Thorogood

Author Extraordinaire
Anthony is honoured to be invited to deliver a writers studio at this year’s Bay of Fires Winter Arts Festival.  But who is he….?
Born in 1953, that makes him a baby boomer. His dad ran a market stall in London, selling anything and everything, but when he was told to give it up or die from the cold, the family packed up and migrated to Australia.

Jump ten years and Anthony won a scholarship to the University of Adelaide and it was there that he started writing and staging plays. He says: 'I could write funny lines that made people laugh and I could write good dialogue, so I was a natural'.

In the early eighties, Anthony grabbed a backpack and went walkabout around the world. While he was away he worked in all sorts of jobs. He picked grapefruit in Israel, oranges in Greece, olives up a mountain in Crete, he was a head barman in a pub in Yorkshire, he worked in a youth hostel in the south of England and he was even in a Bollywood movie.

During this time Anthony wrote his first novel: A Foxtrot Through India, which had the distinction of almost wining a literary prize in a Yorkshire Writers Festival. The judges loved it, unfortunately it was far too short, size does matter!

Anthony returned to Australia in the late 80's with a Yorkshire lass named Sue and in 1999 they started Thorogoods Cider in Burra South Australia. Thorogoods Cider was featured on Landline and Leyland's Australia, it was written up in every glossy magazines you can name and Anthony was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to write a book on cider. Cider Drink It, Make It, Cook with It was published in 2008 and sold out almost immediately.

Anthony followed the success of his cider book with a series of comic extravaganzas: Bigfoot Littlefoot & West which although popular received mixed revues, no one had ever read anything quite that zany before. These were followed by Anthony's most successful books to date the Jack Hamma Action Adventure Series starting with Shakespeare on the Roof.

Anthony has also published a book on cycling: Freewheeling, a cookbook with his wife Sue and Sex Sardines and Sauerkraut the first in a series of romantic travel adventures. In 2015 Anthony and Sue sold their cider farm to pursue Anthony's writing full time and they moved to the beautiful Island of Tasmania.

What the Punters Say:
'It's great to have another Jack Hamna Action Adventure. Thorogood just gets better. His dialogue is spare and pacey and his descriptions make the situations and characters come alive.'  A. Pierce

'I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the latest Jack Hamma book and was not disappointed.' John Tyson

'I've just finished Poirot Packs a Punch and what a good read it was - the same fast paced action we've come to expect from a Jack Hamma story; a bit of romantic crossed-wires and some lively characters including my favourite, crusty old Adair who has more spunk than most half her age.'  Amazon Reviewer

'Shakespeare on the Roof: What a splendid book. How come Australians are able to do such fast action packed books? Part action, part private detective and 100% funny. Jack Hamma is a brilliant character, reluctantly getting himself into lots of tricky situations and so difficult to kill. Really looking forward to reading the next Jack Hamma Story.' J.D. Denness

'Sex Sardines and Sauerkraut, my first read by Thorogood. The title got my curiosity, so readable and so funny. All other authors are on hold as I am just starting my 6th book by Thorogood.  Nothing quite like starting a new day with a good story and a good laugh.'  Julie Evans
